What can I take from this? I have watched this movie , and as well as action scenes such as fast paced shots, tense music building up, all the elements have been perfectly synchronized which is a must for the assignment of the opening two minutes.

Audience Profiling:

I was very surprised to see that majority of the population that watched this movie was of the male gender, even though the movie revolved around a female lead, or maybe that is what the male gender wanted to see. It was easy to address what type of audience and what age-range watched it, the mid-range of age mostly watched this film demonstrating a strong attraction between types of movies and types of audience.

PG Movie Rating

Films that are have this certificate either on their poster, back of the DVD or before the film starts requires that if the audience is a child then they should be with a parent .For a film to be classed as a PG certificate the would have to follow these guidelines;

Theme: More serious issues may be featured, e.g. crime, domestic violence, racism as long as there is no kind of promoting such issues.
Language: Mild bad language only.
Nudity: Natural nudity, with no sexual context.
Sex: Sexual activity may be implied, but should be discreet and infrequent.
Violence: Moderate violence, without detail, may be allowed – if it can be explained by its setting for e.g. historic places.

18 Movie Certificate

Films that are have this certificate either on their poster, back of the DVD or before the film starts requires the audience to be over 18. For a film to be classed as a 18 certificate the would have to follow these guidelines;

Theme: There are no constraints at this level on theme.
Language: There are no constraints at this level on language.
Nudity: There are no constraints at this level on nudity.
Horror: There are no constraints at this level on horror
Violence: Any detailed portrayal of violent or dangerous acts which is likely to promote the activity is not allowed.
Drugs: This film can have drug use visible in the film however promoting it is not acceptable
Sexual activity: More explicit images of sexual activity cannot be shown unless they can be exceptionally justified by the context within the film. Anything more sexual is rated as an ‘R18’.

After reveiwing all of these certificate ratings and taking each one into account we decided to stick with the 15 rating as it is midway and allows us to target 18 year olds as well meaning little restrictions to age. We also thought 15 would be appropriate as we in our film there wont be scenes which would go against the guidelines set to a 15 certificate rating.

Universal Film Certificate

Universal- The universal certificate means anyone can watch the film. This will be because the film has very mild and light hearted content. Although the universal certificate means anyone can watch it is advised children under four shouldn't watch the film as the children are very unpredictable and it's impossible to know what will upset them.

 

Suitable for AllDifferent children are upset by different things, so it is sometimes difficult to say what might upset a particular child. However, U films should be suitable for audiences aged four years and over. If there is any violence, threat or horror in a U film, it should be over quickly and the film should tell children that everything will turn out okay. Films and DVDs for children should make clear to them the difference between right and wrong.

• Theme/Topics - Films and DVDs should be about subjects which are generally suitable for younger audiences.

• Language - There should be very little mild bad language.

• Nudity - There can be occasional glimpses of people who have no clothes on, as long as they are not linked to romantic activities.

• Sex and relationships - Only mild references (e.g. to 'making love') and mild behaviour (e.g. kissing) are allowed.

• Violence and Threat - Mild violence only. Some mild threat and menace are allowed.

• Dangerous Behaviour - There should be no dangerous behaviour that can be easily copied by young children.

Nudity: Nudity is allowed, but the sexual context will be brief and discreet.
Sex: Sexual activity may be implied. Sexual references may reflect the familiarity of most adolescents today with sex education through school.
Violence: Violence must not dwell on detail. There should be no emphasis on injuries or blood. Sexual violence may only be implied or briefly indicated and without physical detail.

What is a 12A certification?

12A is for cinema use only and states that this movie is for 12 years and over or can be watched if accompanied by an adult. This is because there may be some material that may not be deemed fit for even a 12 year old but this may not apply to all 12 year old's, hence there is a rating of 12A which shows more leniency.

Discriminatory language or behaviour must be kept to a minimum if any. There are also moderate sex scenes, soft drugs and some references to aggression and violence. The use of horror should also be moderate. The soft drugs can be shown in 12A certificate movies but may not be glamorized or educational.

Sex and nudity is bot allowed but still rather limited in the sense that too much nudity are prohibited along with what is included in the sex scene. An example of a 12A certificate movie would be: The Hunger Games (2012)

Film Certificate - 15

The film certificate 15 is for ages 15 and over.

Nobody under the age of 15 will be able to watch a 15 rated movie. This is because of the following:

• It can involve adult themes.
• It can involve the use of heavy drugs.
• Strong language.
• Moderate sex references.
• Some moderate horror scenes
• Some references to murders and blood.

R&P urban/action movie

Fast Five- 2010
Fast Five is an action film, this is very closely linked to the the opening two minutes of our film assignment and the main reason as to why I chose to analyze this was the fact that althought the film had reached it's fifth installment in the series the consistency is mindblowing. This movie has an element of suspense as well as excitement, so my group and I have discussed as to having some surprise elements for the audience which would inturn help the whole opening have a jaw-dropping effect.  

R&P Sound tracks to implement

I have sampled many soundtracks, fast paced, gradual noise building up, I have come across the non-copyright soundtrack 'Clubbed to Death'. It starts off slowly, then builds with added tension, givng an electrical like surge into the audience, of course we can adjust some of the music in accordance to the opening of our film but it is nothing that isn't easy to do.

Action movie - Prince of Persia 2010

Prince of Persia as an american fantasy/action/romance film, as the film is easily related to the urban action genre of the opening two minutes film assignment. One of the key factors as to why I have chosen to have a look at this trailer was the sound and music used to set the pace of certain action scenes, these elements really fit in well as our genre is action as well. As the movie is very fast paced, set in a different time-zone, setting and time I was intruiged as to how it dragged the audience of this time into it's trance. My group and I have planned top use some soft music at the beginning, then gradually building up to fast paced sound to give the audience and the scene a real sense of urgency, and off-the-seat impulses.

Above is a power point showing our planning of our opening two minutes of a movie. What we have included is basically the research into mise-en-scene as our powerpoint talks about costumes, props and location which are all sectors looked at when looking into mise-en-scene.

Research and Planning- Action Movie

Bad Boys 2

The first two minutes are quite vague, with the lighting being dimmed, showing drugs being manufactured in secrecy an obvious crime against the law. The next scene shows the two main characters, joking around with each other displaying an element of comedy, which fits in all this serious atmosphere which was created before. Even though the film assignment is an action genre, my group and I have discussed some possible scene displaying some secrecy being shared with only the audience. Overall, we have a good idea as to what we are prepared for and what things need tightening up.

G.I. Joe 2: Retaliation



As I could not find the first two minutes of this movie i was able to take out some blockbusting elements from   it, which in turn have inspired my group and i to experiment with different flash features and exploding effects within our two minute film assignment. As i was watching this trailer i realized that the genre chosen being action, we could implement some WOW factors to really grab the audience's attention, little effects like scenes with violence could have slow motion and more than usual blood used to exaggerate the situation of the victim and add that extra dimension to our assignment, I am referring to fake blood, not real obviously, another thing that i realized was that we should not add too much and stay in distance with the planning and time management.

Faster 2010

The movie starts off dark, mysterious feeling, until realization of dwayne johnson (the actor) being held in a cell of a prison becomes clear. He is looking at a picture, walking with pace, from one end of the cell to the other, getting faster and faster, growing more and more impatient by the second, as if something is going to happen, the whole picture becomes clear that he was waiting to be released, I mean wouldn't anyone? anyway, the lighting utilized at first was natural, as the light was not on in the cell, it explains as to why he was in the dark in the first instance. The lighting obviously becomes more stronger giving the effect that he was moving onto cleaner pastures. Expletives were being shouted at him by other cell mates, typical behaviour you would expect from convicts, even if it is being negatively stereotypical. The whole setting looks flawless, and the dark suspenseful music really gives it that fear factor. I am going to take into consideration as to what type and kind of music i will use in the film assignment, after discussing it with my group, another element I am willing to introduce is mystery and secrecy to give the assignment that 'fear factor'.

Definitions of pictures:
1. The gun immediately shows a sign of danger and seriousness, a no-nonsense attitude is also depicted from this picture.
2. The hoodie stereo-typically shows a youthful troublesome character, giving plenty of room for speculation as to whether the chosen genre would be of controlled or unconditional violence.
3. The handcuffs immediately show that the dark side of the story-line  showing real criminal intent.
4. The dark alley-way also shows a fearful face, which helps venomously, to create a blood pulsing effect on the audience.
5. The picture shows the setting as being very urban, at night, giving off a statement, that there is nowhere to hide.
6. The bundles of cash show that the characters may be serious game players in the underworld, street business and all that which goes with it.
7. The balaclava instantly sets the audience guessing as to who the attacker/thief/bad guy is, the balaclava also connotes secrecy, covering the face from existence, visibility and recognition.
8. The knuckle dusters display the image of pure violence, damage, hatred towards the victim or otherwise.
9. The dark hand instantaneously gives a dark and blind feeling to the audience as well as the light pouring down on the knife, a weapon of murder may just shake the audience off their pulsating heartbeat.
10. The smashed glass displays visible damage to the audience as well as the vague figure of who carried out the act is far from being able to see, this plays around with the audience's minds contributing to the whole scheme of things.
11.   The splattered blood connotes instant suggestions as to where it came from and how, questions become definite as answers are not provided.
12.  This picture is easy to figure out, the violence is enough, but three times the violence on one person is horrific, creating an element of 'feeling sorry' for the victim, deployed from the audience.

Horror Genre

Hellraiser 2: The first Two Minutes

The movie starts off with a bang, where the lead female actress goes up against the antagonist of the film. The lighting utilized is very artificial, with the help of computerized graphics and illusions the director was able to pull off his desired work. the clothes of the woman look as if she was going to go to sleep or maybe woken up from her sleep, this has a panic effect on the audience as to what happened previously. The two minutes, looked as if the film was arriving on the back of something, maybe from the first installment of the series. 

Comedy/Humour

Superbad: First Two Minutes

The first two minutes of the film just focuses on two friends having a casual chat over the phone. The two friends get focused on the camera for an equal amount of time, but the first friend in the movie is shown prevalence, this is shown when the camera is always being focused on his head from a close range. The lighting is natural in the first actors setting as he is outside, whereas the second friend is inside, the lighting is artificial.   

Romance/Drama Film

Dear John (2010): First Two Minutes

This movie starts off with the lead male's voice, he takes the audience into a journey while he is telling the story, at the same time, it is visible he is in a still position suffering from pain. At the very beginning of the film the camera angle is from the lead actors perspective, as if the audience is looking through his eyes, this makes the audience have a glimpse of his view. As the film progresses onto one minute and a half the scene changes to when he was a little boy, it was obvious he was having a flashback. The lighting was very natural over the two-minute course, the clever trick the director probably utilized was moving the camera angle diagonally-up above the lead actor's face to become one with the natural light of the sun rays, which in-turn created a perfectly orchestrated shot, which also contributed to the optimism of the audience.

Preliminary Task Evaluation

There are a few things that I thought that we could have worked on, the fluidity of the speech, the length and increasing the angle shots of the filming. The speaking parts, (personally on my behalf) should have been louder, the length of the filming by including more camera angles and shots, for example a high angle shot in the corridor outside the classroom should have been implemented to show the collision in more detail.

The filming was swiftly quick, as the whole group had good communication with each other, everybody had an input to the discussions about the filming, which helped everyone including myself aware of which roles we had been designated to.

The second half of the filming was pretty frustrating due to the unavailability of the class, tom filmed the scene where matt walked into the class, and interaction with Aaron and I soon followed. This part of the task was where the shot angles could really be utilised, simply because of the reason that there was more space affordable, and the natural lighting which was flawless gave an extra reason for optimism.

Action movie

The Expendables- first two mins
This movies starts off with a dark, strikingly mysterious feeling, almost giving off a 'not for the faint-hearted' feel, where the lighting is very dimmed, kept to a minimal, leaking only the shadows and vague silhoettes of each character. As the movie gradually moves on the lighting becomes more stronger, piercing the darkness and soothing the music in the background, suddenly the first voice penetrates to the surface breaking the walls of the audience. The sound effects start to gain more momentum building up, setting the pace of the characters' running, pulsating the heartbeats of the audience, such as myself. The title of the movie 'The Expendables' is displayed at the centre of the screen, with complete silence, in a murky silver colour, giving a rustic, badass, no-nonsense attitude of the movie. 

Preliminary Task

The first scene starts off with Matt and Nadib, walking into each other, sparking off a bit of an angry moment, the lighting involved within this scene, had been fairly easy to manipulate, artificial lighting was only implemented as that was the only visibly available element. The lighting implemented within the last scene had been mainly natural, due to the positional seating of aaron and I, the camera angle had more freedom to roam.
